Overview

Tunnelled catheter placement

Insertion of a soft, tunnelled catheter under the skin to provide reliable longer-term access for hemodialysis.

A tunnelled dialysis catheter is a soft tube placed into a large vein (usually in the neck) and tunnelled under the skin to create a stable, lower-infection-risk access point for hemodialysis.

It is used when a patient needs dialysis for several weeks to months, or while a permanent access such as an AV fistula matures. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with imaging guidance as a day-care procedure.
