Overview

Graft biopsy

Ultrasound-guided biopsy of a transplanted kidney to check for rejection or other problems and guide treatment.

A graft biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from a transplanted kidney (the graft). It is the most reliable way to find out why a transplanted kidney may not be working as expected.

The biopsy helps our nephrology team detect and grade rejection, infection, drug toxicity, or recurrence of the original kidney disease, so that treatment can be adjusted precisely. It is usually performed under local anaesthesia with ultrasound guidance as a day-care procedure.
